Amaravati to have noise monitoring stations
The authority is in the process of hiring an acoustical consultant to aid in the development of the project.

    Express News Service

VIJAYAWADA: With an objective to make Amaravati the first ‘noise free’ city of India, the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) is working towards creating a noise monitoring system in the new capital. With the construction activity which is expected to increase further in the next few years, the authority is going to set noise and vibration standards, which the stakeholders will have to adhere to.

The authority is in the process of hiring an acoustical consultant to aid in the development of the project. “As a part of our initiative to make Amaravati, which will witness major construction activity in the next five to ten years, a smart and sustainable city, we are going to develop a noise monitoring system and set guidelines for the potential developers and stakeholders to follow,” the officials said.

According to the officials, the authority has recently assessed the levels of noise in 15 different locations of the capital region, where the day and night equivalents were between 40-55 decibels. As a part of the project, noise monitoring stations will be set up at various locations of the capital. The information from the stations will be used to provide recommendations for the reduction of noise. It may be noted that Vijayawada has a ‘Real Time Noise Monitoring’ mechanism installed near the All India Radio station, by the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board.

The authority has also floated a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the selection of acoustical consultancy. As per the RFP, the consultant will promulgate guidelines and standards including noise limits, building codes, proximity to noise sources and outline typical noise mitigation measures such as barriers, landscaping and creation of tranquil spaces such as parks.

For the record, monitoring the levels of water and noise pollution is one of the mandates of the environmental clearance given for the capital construction. The authority is also going to set up a river water quality monitoring station to adhere to the norms.
