Another tunnel in Indrakeeladri to give way for Vijayawada Metro

APTransco estimates 10 to 15 MW of power for the project
A second tunnel, close to the existing one, facilitating roadway through Indrakeeladri, is most likely to be dug to give way for the proposed Vijayawada Metro Rail, according to reliable sources in APTransco. However, the tunnel will be far away from the Kanakadurga temple to avoid controversies, the source said.

“The tunnel proposal has not yet been officially documented, but it is certainly on the cards. Transco is working out its plans, including expansion of the sub-station abutting the Pundit Nehru Bus Station,” said a top official at APTransco. He added that the digging of the tunnel was inevitable, and that its exit point was most likely to be at Kummaripalem centre.

He also hinted at the imminent public resistance to the project on account of the tunnel cutting through the densely populated areas in the city. If this conflict situation is to be avoided, the Metro route itself has to be altered, which is difficult under the present circumstances, he observed.

APTransco is bracing to meet the power requirement for the Metro Rail project, which is estimated to be between 10 and 15 Mega Watts. The DMRC has to choose between underground cables and overhead lines from Transco’s supply points. It depends on the cost factor and other logistical issues, according to him.

The department is taking steps to open supply points at Gunadala, Ganguru and Krishnalanka (near Pandit Nehru Bus Station) and laying additional lines, if necessary, through an underground tunnel, which is proposed to be dug between Indrakeeladri and the existing tunnel at Chittinagar. However, the exact location of the proposed tunnel is yet to be spotted.

The representatives of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which has been entrusted with the job of preparing the Detailed Project Report, inquired about the availability of power infrastructure in a recent meeting with top officials of Transco in the city.

Transco officials offered to provide sourcing / supply points at the above locations and do other things that may be required by the DMRC. However, they are waiting for clarity on the location of the second tunnel from which the power lines have to be connected to the grid

Study on linking Metro with Capital

Detailed report for the Rs. 6,708-crore project ready, says official
Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation Limited (AMRC) Managing Director N. Ramakrishna Reddy on Sunday said a study on the feasibility of linking the Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS)-Nidamanur or PNBS-Penamalur corridor with Amaravati would be done soon.

Giving a power-point presentation on the project at a programme at the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) council hall here, Mr. Reddy said officials from the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) had requested the corporation to extend the project up to Amaravati. He also sought the cooperation of corporators for the completion of the project by 2019.

“If the project gets delayed, then the cost escalates. Thus, we request corporators to educate people on the advantages of the project,” he said.

The fare will be less than the amount charged by drivers of sharing auto rickshaws in the city, he said, adding that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Rs. 6,708-crore Metro Rail had already been prepared.

VMC Commissioner G. Veerapandian, who was also present at the event, said the State government, with the assistance of Centre, had taken up the project to ensure better transport facilities to people in the capital region. He added the corporation would extend necessary support for the construction of Metro rail.

Mayor Koneru Sridhar advised corporators to clear doubts among people on the upcoming project.

AMRC officials later clarified doubts raised by a few corporators.

VIJAYAWADA: With expected increase in the population of Vijayawada, and the city becoming base camp for construction of the capital city Amaravati, importance of metro rail, which is considered hassle free and faster mode of public transport system, was stressed during the awareness programme for elected representatives of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation on Sunday.

Explaining the advantages of metro rail and other aspects, Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation Limited (AMRC) managing director NP Ramakrishna Reddy expressed confidence of completing the project by 2019 with public support and cooperation.

Making a power point presentation about Amaravati Metro Rail project, Reddy said: “With the city becoming part of the capital region, movement of the people will increase manifold, but the roads are not wide enough to support further increase in traffic.

Under the circumstances, metro rail will be the viable option that can provide affordable and easy travel for the people in the city. Reddy said: “In the first phase of the metro rail project, two corridors will be constructed with an estimated cost of Rs. 6,708 crore and detailed project report for the same had also been prepared.”

According to him, the first corridor will be of 12.76 km long with 12 stations from Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) to Penamaluru through Bandar Road and the second corridor will be of 13.27 km from PNBS to Nidamanuru through Eluru Road. PNBS will be common junction point and the distance between every station will be 1.2 km. The metro rail will have automatic telecommunication system.

AMRC chief said that the travel in metro rail will be cost effective and much cheaper than an average price of travelling in a shared auto in the city. “A total of 20 coaches (10 each for a corridor) will be there for the first phase of the project and Nidamanoor will be the junction where those trains will be parked,” he explained.

Reddy said that in the second phase of the project, they are planning to have one corridor along the Number 5 bus route, Ajit Singh Nagar to Auto Nagar. “The proposal from CRDA for having metro rail connected to Amaravati is being studied,” he added. Stating that any delay in the execution of the project will only increase the project cost, he sought cooperation from both public and public representatives.

Vijayawada Mayor K Sridhar wanted the works of metro rail to be executed in an expeditious manner before the deadline without any compromise on quality. He asked the municipal corporators to have complete understanding of the project and clear any misapprehensions over the project among the people.

Municipal commissioner G Veerapandian explained about the efforts made for having the project sanctioned for Vijayawada along with one for Visakhapatnam. Explaining the surveys conducted for the project in preparing the DPR, he wanted public cooperation for having the project completed at the earliest. Mayor, commissioner and corporators congratulated Delhi Metro Railway Corporation director SD Sharma and his team for preparing DPR for Amaravati Metro rail.

Power supply for Metro: tenders for consultant to be called soon

The AP-Transco and Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (SPDCL) will know the power requirement of Amaravati Metro Railway (AMR) once the consultant being appointed for the purpose comes up with its assessment of the connected load that the elevated rail corridor needs.

The electrical contractors enlisted by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which is the designated agency taking up construction of both Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam metro rail projects, will install the supply networks in compliance with the due procedures following the submission of the assessment report by the consultant.

Tenders will be called soon for hiring separate consultants who will study the requirement of power and also water, according to official sources.

Before going for tenders, the DMRC is learnt to be working out the options of laying underground cables and overhead lines from the supply points of the public sector power utilities. It depends on the cost factor and other logistical issues.

Power supply points have been proposed at Gunadala, Ganguru and Krishnalanka (near Pandit Nehru Bus Station) and additional lines were mooted through an underground tunnel which is proposed to be dug between Indrakeeladri and the existing tunnel at Chittinagar.

The representatives of DMRC inquired about the availability of power infrastructure in a recent meeting with top officials of Transco in the city. The designated contractors of DMRC have provided 33Kv three-phase and 25Kv single phase traction power supply points for the Delhi metro and the requirement of AMR are likely to be similar in terms of load. AMR will have far less number of stations than the Delhi metro.

The power requirement apart, a study of consumption of water for drinking and sanitation purposes is to be studied and sources finalized keeping the long-term perspective in view.

Priority is being given to power and water aspects as the project gained pace with the marking of stations and land survey at different places in PNBS-Nidamanur and PNBS-Penamalur corridors. Detailed design consultants are being called for them at the present juncture.
